How does Butacort 100 Aq (Budesonide) work?
Budesonide belongs to a group of medicines known as corticosteroids. Corticosteroids act inside the body's cells to decrease the release of certain chemicals that are involved in the immune system, and which initiate an inflammatory reaction. By decreasing the release of these chemicals, corticosteroids help to reduce inflammation.
In asthma, the airways tighten due to inflammation and can also be blocked by mucus. This makes it difficult for air to get into and out of the lungs. By preventing the inflammation and excess mucus formation, budesonide helps prevent asthma attacks. It is not used to treat an asthma attack.
This medicine is given via an inhaler device. This delivers the budesonide directly to the place where it is needed. When used in this way, only a small dose is required and the likelihood of side effects occurring elsewhere in the body is low.
