What is Imiquimod used for?
- To treat warts of the anal and genital areas
- To treat a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma
- To treat actinic keratosis. This causes rough areas of skin in people who have been exposed to a lot of sunshine over the course of their lifetime
How It Works
Applied as a cream Imiquimod or Aldara is an immune response modifier. These warts are causes by a virus and Imiquimod or Aldara stimulates the immune system to fight the virus.
Side Effects
Imiquimod or Aldara is applied at home over the course of several months. Compared to other topical treatments for genital and perianal warts Imiquimod or Aldara produces less burning and skin irritation.
Cautions for People
Because 3-4 months of therapy is needed, people need to be compliant. People who cannot be compliant or would have problems applying the cream, for example those with manual dexterity problems, are not good candidates for this therapy.
Drug Interactions
Imiquimod or Aldara is applied to the affect area and is not routinely systemically absorbed, thus it has little chance to interact with other drugs. |
