Nizoral (Ketoconazole) Shampoo Use

Nizoral Shampoo contains the active ingredient ketoconazole, which is a type of medicine called an antifungal. It is used to treat infections with fungi and yeasts.

Nizoral (Ketoconazole) kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disprution in production of ergosterol dispruts the fungal cell membrane, causing holes to appear in it.

Nizoral (Ketoconazole) is used to treat a number of different types of fungal and yeast infections. Nizoral (Ketoconazole) shampoo is used to treat scalp conditions that are caused by infection with the yeast Pityrosporum. These include seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff, which is considered to be a mild form of seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Nizoral (Ketoconazole) shampoo should be used to wash the hair twice weekly for two to four weeks. It should be left for three to five minutes before rinsing. Once the scalp has cleared up these conditions can be prevented from coming back by using the shampoo once every one to two weeks.

Nizoral (Ketoconazole) Shampoo Side Effects

Nizoral (Ketoconazole) 1% Shampoo causes minimal skin and scalp irritation. The adverse effects reported by patients treated with Nizoral Shampoo consisted mainly of: greasy hair or scalp (1.2%); dry (brittle) hair or scalp (0.9%); irritation (0.5%); burning sensation and dryness (eyebrows) (0.2%).

Precautions

Irritation may occur when the shampoo is used immediately after prolonged treatment with topical corticosteroids. If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation should occur, use of the shampoo should be discontinued. Due to the teratogenic nature of the active ingredient, ketoconazole, the use of the shampoo is not recommended in pregnant or nursing women except under the advice of a physician. Clinical data on the use of Nizoral (Ketoconazole) 1% Shampoo in children under 12 are not available; therefore, such use is not recommended except under the advice of a physician.
