How does Pro-Banthine (Propantheline) work?
Propantheline bromide is a type of medicine called an antimuscarinic. It works by blocking the action of a chemical called acetylcholine, that is produced by nerve cells.
Acetylcholine is responsible for many actions throughout the body. It acts on muscarinic receptors that are present on smooth muscle in places such as the gut, bladder and eye. This muscle is not under voluntary control. When activated by acetylcholine, the muscarinic receptors cause the smooth muscle to contract. In the gut, the contraction of these muscles is responsible for pushing food through the intestines. In the bladder, contraction of this muscle is involved in urination.
Propantheline works by blocking muscarinic receptors. This prevents the action of acetylcholine and therefore causes smooth muscle to relax.
In the gut, this prevents the muscle spasms which occur in in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. In this syndrome the normal activity of the gut muscle is lost. The muscle spasms result in symptoms such as heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. By relaxing the gut muscle, propantheline can relieve the symptoms of this condition and similar conditions caused by spasm of the muscle in the gut.
Relaxing the smooth muscle in the bladder prevents the involuntary spasms which can allow leakage of urine from the bladder. Propantheline can therefore be used to treat involuntary urination in adults.
Propantheline can also be used to treat excessive sweating, since blocking the action of acetylcholine also dries secretions such as sweat and tears.
