What is Epidermal Growth Factor (Beta-urogastrone) used for?

Epidermal growth factor, commonly known as EGF, is a protein found in the human body. It has been identified as having attributes of cell growth and differentiation. This is important because it aids scientists in understanding diseases where cells have been compromised. Some examples of these diseases include tumors, senile dementia, malformations and wound healing. EGF was discovered by scientists Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini. The Nobel Prize in Medicine was award to the two in 1986 for their work with EGF. EGF works by attaching to epidermal growth factor receptors that are on the skin’s surface. A chemical reaction occurs that causes biochemical changes within a cell. These change result in cell revitalization.

Another benefit of EGF has been its ability to quicken healing time. When applied as a topical cream to burns and wounds, EGF has been shown to reduce the length of recovery. In clinical trials where EGF was used to treat wounds or burns, the rate at which the wound or burn healed was significantly faster. Additionally, studies have shown that wounds of the cornea have also shown remarkable results in regards to quicker healing. EGF works at the cellular level to convert the damaged cells into healthy cells. EGF’s application could be far-reaching and be able to restore health in cells in the liver, thyroid, ovaries and pituitary glands.

EGF has also been shown to rejuvenate the skin for a young appearance. Women who had been having Botox injections and laser treatments in order to regain younger and more vibrant skin are now considering EGF a viable option. EGF helps to treat discolored skin as restores elasticity to the skin.

Epidermal Growth Factor has been used in topical creams. The traditional course of treatment to regenerate aging skin is twice daily for four to six weeks.
