What is Epidermal Growth Factor (Beta-urogastrone) used for?
Epidermal growth factor, commonly known as EGF, is a protein found in the human body.
It has been identified as having attributes of cell growth and differentiation. This is important because it aids scientists in understanding diseases where cells have been compromised. Some examples of these diseases include tumors, senile dementia, malformations and wound healing.
EGF was discovered by scientists Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini. The Nobel Prize in Medicine was award to the two in 1986 for their work with EGF. EGF works by attaching to epidermal growth factor receptors that are on the skin’s surface. A chemical reaction occurs that causes biochemical changes within a cell. These change result in cell revitalization.
